As the SOS African Wildlife initiative nears the conclusion of its current phase, we are excited to announce our upcoming learning journey titled “The SOS African Wildlife Initiative: Reflecting on the Past, Shaping the Future.” This process will bring together grantees, partners, and IUCN Save Our Species staff to review the initiative’s achievements and impact, exchange knowledge and lessons, and recommendations for the future.

Over the past seven years, the SOS African Wildlife initiative has supported 91 projects that addressed different conservation needs across Sub-Saharan Africa. By focusing on protecting threatened species, enhancing ecosystem restoration, and fostering sustainable livelihoods for local communities, our implementing partners have amassed a wealth of knowledge, both in the conservation field and in grant-making mechanisms.

First, an online workshop held on October 24 offered an open platform for all grantees to share experiences, reflect on challenges, and exchange best practices. This session was the first step of the process in helping participants gain a deeper understanding of the initiative’s impact.

Following this, an in-person workshop held in Nairobi, Kenya on November 19-22 will provide another opportunity for a focused approach, allowing participants to delve into lessons learned, celebrate achievements, and generate recommendations for any future initiatives.

Early next year, a series of knowledge products will be developed, summarizing the insights, best practices, and success stories discussed during the sessions. These materials will be vital for demonstrating the initiative’s impact and form the basis for further awareness raising and advocacy work.

Through these efforts, we hope that the SOS African Wildlife initiative will continue to make a lasting impact on the preservation of Africa’s unique and vulnerable wildlife, ensuring that species, habitats and people thrive together.

Stay tuned!
