Large-antlered Muntjac Muntiacus vuquangensis

Project description

The Large-antlered Muntjac is a Critically Endangered deer species endemic to the Annamite Mountains of Vietnam, Laos, and parts of Cambodia. Discovered in the 1990s, the species faces extinction due to a snaring crisis, with populations in Vietnam severely depleted. However, the Southern Annamites, with vast connected habitats and lower hunting pressure, remain a stronghold for the species. Camera-trapping surveys in Bidoup-Nui Ba and Chu Yang Sin National Parks have regularly documented the muntjac and its fawns since 2019, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts in this region. Yet, large unexplored areas within its range and limited genetic data, despite seven specimens at the Da Lat Biology Institute, hinder effective conservation planning and long-term species viability.

Threats

Habitat loss & degradation

Poaching

Reduced genetic diversity

Project objectives

The project aims to improve understanding of the Large-antlered Muntjac in Vietnam’s Southern Annamites. It addresses key gaps in knowledge regarding the species’ status, distribution, and threats in unexplored areas. Genetic material from museum specimens and frontlets will be collected to assess historical genetic diversity. Combined with camera-trap data from Bidoup-Nui Ba, Chu Yang Sin, and Phuoc Binh Montane Forests, the findings will guide conservation planning for this species in the Southern Annamites.

Project activities

  • Gather local knowledge to identify large-antlered muntjac presence.
  • Conduct frontlet surveys to confirm historical occurrences through biological evidence.
  • Implement targeted camera-trap surveys at sites with confirmed past presence.
  • Analyse specimens at the Da Lat Biology Museum to assess historical genetic diversity.
  • Update knowledge on the status, distribution, and genetics of the large-antlered muntjac in the Southern Annamites.
