Project description
Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed) is an invasive alien plant species that has recently been detected in the Mondego River, particularly within Parque Verde. If left unmanaged, the species has the potential to spread rapidly along the river system, threatening native biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and recreational use of the area.

The AlternaOut project aims to intervene at an early stage of the invasion to prevent the species from becoming established and spreading further downstream. By combining monitoring, targeted control measures, prevention and public engagement, the project seeks to contain the invasion while building awareness of the importance of early detection and rapid response to invasive alien species.
This project is implemented by the Comunidade Intermunicipal da Região de Coimbra.
Project objectives
The project aims to identify and map all existing populations of Alternanthera philoxeroides in the Mondego River, with a particular focus on the Parque Verde area. It will mechanically remove the species at an early stage of the invasion to prevent its establishment and further spread. During all control operations, the project will implement biosecurity measures to minimise the accidental dispersal of plant fragments and reduce the risk of reinvasion. It also seeks to raise awareness among river users and local stakeholders about the impacts of invasive alien species and the importance of prevention. Finally, the project will continuously monitor the affected areas to assess the effectiveness of the interventions and detect any new outbreaks as early as possible.
