Project

Empowering communities with knowledge to Mekong stingray and its habitat

Duration
2024 - 2025
Location
Thailand
Species protected
Mekong Stingray Hemitrygon laosensis

Project overview

The Mekong River, a lifeline for millions, faces unprecedented threats from dam construction, pollution, illegal fishing, and climate change. These pressures have driven the Mekong stingray to the brink of extinction. The Kaeng Khon Phi Long area and Northern Mekong river in Ciangrai, a vital habitat for diverse aquatic life, is under increasing strain.

This project aims to conserve the habitat of the Mekong Stingray and its ecosystem by engaging local communities in collaborative conservation efforts. By combining traditional knowledge with scientific research, we will develop strategies to protect habitats, restore fish populations, and promote sustainable livelihoods. This initiative aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, emphasizing community-led conservation for a thriving Mekong.

Project objectives

  • Strengthen the capacity of communities to conserve and protect the species and habitat of the Mekong Stingray through the participation mechanism of local fishing networks in Chiang Rai Province.
  • Conduct activities to survey with local knowledge and eDNA scientific tools to survey the population and distribution of the Mekong Stingray for use in conservation planning and raising awareness among communities.
  • Manage the knowledge system and public communication on the conservation of species and protection of the habitat of the Mekong Stingray.

Project activities

Community capacity building and knowledge sharing

  • Strengthening community engagement: Building strong relationships with local fishing communities is crucial for project success. Activities like training workshops, knowledge sharing sessions, and community meetings will empower locals to become active participants in conservation efforts.

Scientific research and monitoring

  • Population assessment and habitat mapping: Conducting surveys using both traditional and scientific methods (eDNA) will provide essential data on stingray populations and habitat conditions. This information will inform conservation strategies and monitoring efforts.

Awareness-raising and advocacy

  • Community-based communication: Developing communication materials and conducting outreach activities tailored to different target audiences (local communities, policymakers, general public) will increase awareness about the Mekong Stingray and the importance of its conservation.
