Project
Understanding how environmental variables influence Critically Endangered fish in the Karnali River
Initiative
Duration
2024 - 2024
Location
Nepal
Species protected
Asla
Schizothorax raraensis
Snow Trout
Schizothorax nepalensis
Project overview
Understanding the status and ecology of threatened fish species is crucial for their long-term conservation and the maintenance of freshwater ecosystems. Species like the Asla and the Snow Trout are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, yet there is very little information available about their ecology and conservation needs. This project aims to study these species’ ecology and raise awareness to protect these threatened fish in the Karnali River Basin of Nepal. The project combines scientific research with public awareness initiatives to promote species conservation in Nepal.

Project objectives
- Understand baseline information such as distribution of the project’s target species in the Karani River Basin of Nepal.
- Understand how environmental parameters and human-caused threats influenced the distribution of the project’s target species in the Karnali River Basin of Nepal.
- Develop the local people’s attitude in order to minimise the threats to protect the project’s target species, and promote long-term conservation approaches in the Karnali River Basin of Nepal.
Project activities
- Fish sampling and taxonomic identification.
- Assessment of habitat and ecology.
- Identify threats and their mitigation.
- Interaction with the local community.
This project is implemented by Shivish Bhandari, Natural Science Society.
